VHP activists detained in Ayodhya

Ayodhya: A dozen Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists were on Friday detained when they tried to march towards the disputed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site here to protest against the alleged removal of tulsi saplings from there, police said.

The VHP activists began an agitation demanding tulsi (basil) saplings, allegedly uprooted by the local administration, be re-planted at the makeshift Ram temple in the disputed area.

Policemen, deployed outside the residence of VHP leader Ram Vilas Vedanti, stopped the activists from leaving the premises and detained them.

The protesters were released after they submitted a memorandum to the resident magistrate of Ayodhya regarding their protest.

The issue cropped up last Sunday, when, on the objection raised by Muslim parties, the administration reportedly removed the tulsi plants planted at the shrine.
