Nigerian held for alleged drug trafficking
New Delhi: A 32-year-old Nigerian, who married an Indian and has been living here, was arrested for being allegedly involved in drug trafficking and 103 grams of cocaine was recovered from his possession, police said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested Sunday Joseph from Pitampura in north Delhi when he had gone there to deliver the cocaine to his clients.
"A trap was laid near the gate of the Delhi Haat, Pitampura Road leading to TV Tower, and Joseph was apprehended by the staff of the narcotics cell of the Crime Branch on Tuesday," Sanjay Kumar Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime and Railways, Delhi.
Joseph studied up to Intermediate School and his father is a retired military officer from Abuja and has three wives, police said.
"Sunday Joseph has 30 sisters and 20 brothers and came in contact with an Indian lady in Lagos in Nigeria and he married her. He came in India for the first time on business visa in April, 2009, but returned to Nigeria after a stay of 4 months," Jain said.
He came back to India in September, 2011, and started exporting readymade garments, jewellery and hair(wig) to Nigeria.
Since he could not earn much for the huge family in Nigeria and to earn quick bucks he joined hands with fellow Nigerian drug traffickers.
"In recent past, Sunday Joseph came in contact with one Nigerian namely Ikke, who used to meet him at Priya Market, Vasant Vihar. Sunday Joseph started procuring cocaine from Ikke and supplying it to his high-profile clients in Delhi," he said.
