Shankaramurthy set for re-election as Council Chairman
Bangalore: Veteran BJP leader D H Shankaramurthy is all set to be elected unopposed as chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council for the second successive term on Wednesday.
Shankaramurthy, who recently won the South-West graduate constituency for a fourth consecutive term, was the lone contender to file nomination papers today for the upper house presiding officer election slated for tomorrow.
In the 75-member house, the ruling BJP has a strength of 41, followed by Congress 17, JDS 12, one Independent and four vacancies.
Opposition Congress and JDS have chosen not to contest going by the majority the ruling dispensation enjoys in the house.
An RSS-groomed leader, Shankaramurthy held the post of chairman, which became vacant after his tenure as member of the upper house ended two weeks ago.
However, he won the June 10 council poll from South-West Graduates constituency.
A one-day special session of the upper house will be held tomorrow for the election of the Chairman.
