Ahmedabad court acquits 48 accused in 2002 rioting
Ahmedabad: A court here on Friday acquitted 48 accused in four cases of rioting and arson, related to post-Godhra riots of 2002.
The cases had been tried together in the city civil and sessions court. Judge M K Dave, while acquitting the accused, held that prosecution failed to bring enough evidence, and the accused should get benefit of doubt. All of them were out on bail.
During the riots following the train burning incident at Godhra on February 27, 2002, a mob set on fire some units in Vatva industrial area of GIDC here. Nobody was injured in the fire, but property was damaged.
Police registered four cases for loot, riot, damaging the public property and arson.
Defence lawyer Sandip Modi had contended that all the accused were falsely implicated, because they were well-known locally.
"Police knew them not only from their faces but with their names, as most of them were active in various public works," advocate Modi had argued.
