SC judge suggests settling issues in Mega Lok Adalat

Chennai: Supreme Court judge P Sathasivam on Saturday said people knock at the doors of courts, as they could not get relief from government in time and suggested that government agencies could settle issues in Mega Lok Adalat.

"It can be very well presumed that if the people could not get relief from government agencies in time, they would approach the court for getting relief... We have to persuade government departments to settle all the matters in Mega Lok Adalat," Justice Sathasivam said at a Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority function here.

Referring to his visit to Madhya Pradesh, where he saw over two lakh cases settled through a Mega Lok Adalat, he said the Madhya Pradesh High Court associated with the state government and resolved thousands of cases relating to property tax, water, electricity dues, land revenue, among others.

Justice Sathasivam said officers of Legal Services Authority have to interact with police, revenue, forest, labour, cooperative, electricity, municipal officers and insurance officials and members of the bar to conduct Lok Adalats effectively.

"To encourage people to get benefits of Mega Lok Adalat, we may insist electricity, banks, local bodies and other concerning government departments to give relief to people by reducing the amount of tax, surcharge, interest and penalty to be levied on, if they settle their disputes in Mega Lok Adalat," he said.

The forest and horticulture department may also provide fruit bearing trees and medicinal plants as a mark of peace and harmony, for distribution among litigants/public who attend these Lok Adalats, he said, adding, this would enhance the green belt and ecological balance too.
