Mayawati demands President’s rule in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Monday took potshots at the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) government over the rising crime graph and incidents of rape, and demanded immediate imposition of President's rule in Uttar Pradesh.
Citing the recent untoward incident of rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Noida, Mayawati said the rape cases in Uttar Pradesh have increased under the Samajwadi Party rule, and added that the ruling government instead of taking firm action against the perpetrators is keen on covering up crimes than providing justice to criminals.
“All kinds of offences such as theft, robbery, extortion, abduction, murder, rape and communal riots have been on the rise in Uttar Pradesh, which is the largest state of the country in terms of population, in comparison to the other states. And in particular, cases of rape with innocent girls and women and other heinous crimes, have shakened the heart of the people here,” she told mediapersons here.
The BSP chief also accused the Samajwadi Party government of coming up with vague and fake promises to divert the public attention from these untoward incidents.
Mayawati further requested Uttar Pradesh Governor BL Joshi to brief President Pranab Mukherjee about the ongoing state of affairs in the Samajwadi Party regime and urge him to impose President's rule in Uttar Pradesh.
“Through the media, I want to say to the honourable Governor of Uttar Pradesh to take cognizance of these matters in perspective of the Constitution and brief the honourable President about the whole affair and urge him to impose President's rule here,” she said.
