Mexican inmates kept crocodile as prison pet

Mexico City: A routine inspection of a prison in Mexico led to an unexpected discovery of a crocodile in one of the prison cells, police said.

The crocodile, kept by inmates as a pet in the eastern city of Chetumal, was freed.

Policemen are trying to find out how the reptile ended up in a prison cell.

The same police team also found 28 roosters which prisoners kept for fun and staged cock-fighting.

According to the Quintana Roo state police, the main aim of the prison inspection was to find forbidden items such as weapons and drugs, but they never expected to discover a reptile and birds.
