Panetta calls Egyptian Defence minister
Washington: US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has called his Egyptian counterpart Abd-al-Fattah Al-Sisi during which the latter restated his country's committment to the Peace Treaty with Israel, the Pentagon said.
"Minister Al-Sisi restated yesterday the Egyptian Armed Forces' commitment to the Peace Treaty with Israel, and underscored that his commitment that the Sinai will not be used as a base to threaten Israel," said the Pentagon Press Secretary George Little after the telephone call between the two leaders.
Panetta commended Al-Sisi for his efforts to address shared security objectives, including Sinai and border security.
The two leaders also discussed the importance of continued security assistance for Egypt, so that the Egyptian Armed Forces can continue to address shared security objectives while modernising their equipment and capabilities, Little said.
During the conversation, Panetta Secretary Panetta receives updates on the political situation in Egypt, the role of the Egyptian Armed Forces during the recent protests, and expressed US commitment to the defence relationship.
"Al-Sisi reiterated his support for the defence relationship, and thanked Secretary Panetta for his leadership and support," Little said.
