Odisha Police arrests Maoist mediator Dandapani Mohanty



Bhubaneswar: Jan Adhikar Manch leader and Maoist mediator Dandapani Mohanty was today arrested from his residence in Berhampur town in Odisha's Ganjam district.

"The police have arrested Dandapani Mohanty in Berhampur. There were several cases pending against him," Director General of Police Prakash Mishra told PTI.

"I cannot say right now whether he was arrested for Maoist links," Mishra said, adding that he was yet to receive details.

Mohanty, a prominent civil right activists, who acted twice as a mediator between Maoists and the state government, was instrumental in the release of two Italian tourists Paolo Bususco and Claudio Colangelo last year and also Malkangiri district collector R Vineel Krishna in 2011.

In both cases Mohanty was named as mediator by the Maoists.

Besides Mohanty, Prof Hargopal and Prof Someswar Rao had also mediated between the government and the Maoists during the abduction of R Vineel Krishna.

Mohanty along with B D Sharma had mediated on behalf of the Maoists in the Italian tourist abduction case.

Earlier, the police had arrested Mohanty's son Sangram for allegedly suppling logistics to state's top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda. He is at present in jail.
