Gulabchand Kataria elected as Raj BJP Leader of Opposition
Jaipur: Senior Bhartiya Janata Party MLA Gulabchand Kataria was Wednesday unanimously elected as the Leader of Opposition by the BJP legislative party, while Deputy Leader of Opposition Ghanshyam Tiwari quit the post ahead of the Budget session beginning tomorrow.
"BJP State president Vasundhara Raje proposed the name of Kataria for the post of Leader of Opposition in a meeting convened at the party office which was unanimously accepted by the members of legislative party," BJP Whip Rajendra Rathore said.
"The Vidhan Sabha Speaker will be informed about the same," he added.
In the meeting, senior leader Ghanshyam Tiwari announced to quit the post of Deputy Leader of Opposition.
Tiwari, who is believed to be displeased by the appointment of Raje as the state president, said that he decided to quit the post on his own.
"I have been working in the interest of the party but the new arrangement (appointment of Raje as the state president and Kataria as the Leader of Opposition) is purely for polls.
If the party high command does not consider me a mass leader, they may appoint a candidate as deputy leader of opposition which they think is suitable," he told PTI.
Raje, who earlier was the leader of opposition, was appointed as the party's state president on February 8.
The party leaders had also decided to replace Raje with Kataria as the Leader of Opposition.
On the other hand, the party finalised its strategy to corner the Ashok Gehlot in the budget session.
"Crime against women is rising, farmers are suffering and the law and order is also deteriorating. These are some of the issues we will raise in the assembly," Raje told reporters after the meeting.
Rathore said that rising number of death due to swine flu and government's failure in tackling the situation, hike in power tariff will be among other issues the party will highlight in the Legislative Assembly session.
