Australian hostage freed by Filipino al Qaeda after 15 months
Manila: The al Qaeda allies in Philippines have reportedly on Saturday released Australian hostage Warren Rodwell on Saturday. Rodwell was kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf militants in 2011 and has spent 15 months in captivity.
A former soldier from Sydney, Rodwell and his wife had set up a shop in the town of Ipil.
Rodwell was kidnapped by armed Abu Sayyaf militants in 2011 for ransom and a video of the hostage was released by the militants in December, as per reports.
Australian PM Julia Gillard has welcomed the news of Rodwell’s release, who is now in the care of local police.
No harm to his physical health has been reported after his release.
