Fishermen venture into sea after 45-day ban ends

Rameswaram: Fishermen put out in large numbers from different parts of this island, Pamban and Mandapam on Saturday after a break of 45 days when fishing had been banned, officials said.

They said 761 Boats from Rameswaram, 80 from Pamban and 558 boats from Mandapam had been given permit to fish and all of them had left.

The Coast guard police and the coastal marine police were helping them to fish within Indian territorial waters. The Sri Lankan navy also had deployed ships near Katchatheevu to prevent Indian fishermen using banned fishing nets and straying into their territory, officials said.

Police said 7000 fishermen had put to sea in and around this island alone.

The 45-day ban on mechanised trawling, which began on April 15, is aimed at preventing fishing activity during what is considered fish breeding season in the Bay of Bengal.
