Politicians cutting across party lines joined in to congratulate the men's hockey team for winning gold in 2014 Asian Games on Thursday.

New Delhi: Politicians cutting across party lines joined in to congratulate the men's hockey team for winning gold in 2014 Asian Games on Thursday.

They also congratulated the Indian women's athletics team for winning gold in 4x400 relay.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while congratulating the team said that he had been closely following “India's progress at the Asian Games”.

The PM also congratulated the “women athletes for winning gold in 4x400 metres relay.”

Modi posted on the micro-blogging site Twitter - “Very good day for India at the Asian Games. Congrats to our Hockey Team and congrats to our women athletes for the gold in 4x400 metres relay.”

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh while congratulating the hockey team hoped that India would win more medals at the Asiads.

And Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that everyone was proud of the team's 'stellar achievement'.

The official Twitter handle of the Congress party posted the following: “Congratulations to Indian Hockey Team for bagging Gold by defeating Pakistan at Asian Games2014.”

Others who showered praise on the men's hockey team were CM of Gujarat Anandiben Patel, Madhya Pradesh CM ShivrajSingh Chouhan and Congress leader Digvijay Singh.

The official Twitter handle Aam Aadmi Party too joined in the celebrations and posted the following on the micro-blogging site:

The Indian men's hockey team regained the gold medal after a gap of 16 years while the women's 4x400m relay team also picked up a yellow metal as India added five medals to jump to the ninth position in the overall standings in the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

The men's hockey players hogged the spotlight with the thrilling victory over arch-rivals Pakistan to ensure a berth in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The last time India had won a gold medal in Asian Games was in Bangkok in 1998.

The women 4x400m relay team, comprising Priyanka Panwar, Tintu Luka, Mandeep Kaur and M R Poovamma, then added to the euphoria by clinching the gold medal with the Asian Games record timing, PTI reported.

It took a shoot-out to determine the winner as both the teams were locked 1-1 in the regulation time of the summit clash at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium.
