New Delhi: Ace Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra won a gold medal in Men's 10m Air Rifle. It is yet another superb performance from Abhinav, who had earlier announced that this would be his last CWG appearance. Abdullah Baki of Bangladesh, who put a strong fight in the latter part of the event won the silver medal. Daniel Rivers of England won the bronze medal. This is India's fifth medal from the weightlifting event after winning two gold, a silver and a bronze on the opening day of the event. 20-year-old Santoshi lifted a total of 188 kg in snatch and clean and jerk to get the bronze as 16-year-old Nigerian schoolgirl Chika Amalaha won the gold with a total lift of 196 kg. Veteran Papua and New Guinea lifter Dika Toua, won the silver with a total lift of 193 kg. The bronze went to Dorothy Ludwig of Canada with 177.2 points. Expectations were high from Heena Sidhu who was eliminated much earlier. Heena had won the silver in the 2010 edition in Delhi. Lawn Bowl -- India beat Fiji 15-11 in Men's pair after making a sensational comeback in the match. Swimming -- Sandeep Sejwal qualifies for men's 100m breaststroke. And with that he becomes 1st Indian swimmer to do that. Sejwal finished 12th overall in the heats. Judo -- India's Sunibala Huidrom wins her women's 70kg repechage round. She will now face Scotland's S Conway for the bronze medal. Squash -- One of India's strong contenders in the sport Joshana Chinappa is defeated 1-3 by Joelle King in Women's Singles. INDIAN SHOOTERS MAKE A POSITIVE START As expected, the Indian shooters have started their campaign on a good note as ace Indian shooter Heena Sidhu qualified for the 10-metre air pistol finals of the 2014 Commonwealth Games by winning maximum points in qualification at the Barry Buddon Shooting centre here Friday. Abhinav Bindra and Ravi Kumar have also qualified for 10m Air Rifle final. INDIA MEN's HOCKEY TEAM BEATS WALES 3-1 Indian men's hockey team have started their CWG campaign on a winning note. They defeated Wales 3-1 in a Pool A tie at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre here. V.R. Raghunath scored the first goal for India off a penalty corner in the 20th minute. But his opener was cancelled out just three minutes by a stinging shot from Andrew Cornick. It was another penalty corner post-break that gave India the lead for the second time in the match. R. Singh was at hand in 42nd minute to turn the ball into the back of the net. Gurwinder Singh Chandi took the match away from Wales in the 47th minute from India`s first open-play goal in the match. ========================================================================= It was a great start for the Indian team on Day 1 where they won seven medals, including two gold. The weightlifters and the judokas were the heroes for the Indian team. While Sukhen Dey and K Sanjita Chanu stole the limelight by clinching a gold each in weightlifting.
