``Batting coach in waiting`` Thorpe looking to develop more Root-like young talents

London: Graham Thorpe, who is poised to be named England`s permanent coach, is looking to help produce more young stars like Joe Root.

Thorpe has been instrumental in the emergence of 22-year-old Root as a Test and one-day player of immense promise and caliber, the Sun reports.

Thorpe is ready to commit to a bigger role with England``s limited-over team as they build for the Champions Trophy at home this summer and the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The former England left-hander has been working at the National Performance Centre in Loughborough for two years and touring with the Lions, and he was promoted by new one-day coach Ashley Giles to work with the senior team in 50-over and Twenty20 cricket when Graham Gooch decided to concentrate on Test cricket, the paper said, Thorpe has been a huge success on this tour and the batsmen love his strong work ethic and innovation, and he said he has enjoyed this stint and now they have to see how it fits in with his other role.

Thorpe added he has worked with some of these players before, and it``s been good seeing how they tick. Thorpe has been speaking about Root``s potential for a couple of years and has been proved correct by the Yorkshireman``s prolific and composed entry to the international stage.

Root scored 73 and 20 not out in his only Test and his unbeaten knock of 79 in England``s win in Napier on Wednesday meant he has scored 30-plus in his first six ODI innings.
