New Delhi: England skipper Alastair Cook on Saturday became England's leading run scorer in Test cricket as he surpassed Graham Gooch's long-standing record.

On the second day of the 2nd Test against New Zealand at Headingley, the opener reached the mark of 32 to cross Gooch's record of 8900 runs, which was intact since 1995.

The 30-year-old, took 114 Test to surpass Gooch’s record, making his runs at an average of 46.82.

Cook, who made his Test debut in 2006, is currently standing on 13th spot among the all-time leading run-scorers.

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is leading the chart with record 15, 921 Test runs under his belt.

Now Cook holds both the English records for most Test centuries (27) as well as most Test runs.

The 30-year-old was appointed England captain back in 2012 following the retirement of Andrew Strauss.
