New Delhi: Angelo Mathews played a blistering knock of 139 runs in just 116 deliveries, to help Sri Lanka put up a fighting total on the board against India in the fifth ODI at Ranchi.

In doing so, Mathews reached three significant personal milestones. The innings that included 6 fours and 10 maximums was the Sri Lankan captain's first ODI hundred. After getting there in his 138th innings, Mathews also got a monkey off his back, that of scoring the most ODI runs without a hundred.

His 10 sixes is also the most by any captain in an ODI innings. Mathews overcame former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting's record of 9 sixes.

The 27-year-old also became the first batsman to score 1000 runs in 2014. Mathews took 25 innings to get to this milestone. The right-hander's knock of unbeaten 139 runs got his tally to 1062 runs this year.

Closing on his heels is India's Virat Kohli, who has 915 runs to his credit in this calendar year. Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan is third on the list with 815 runs in 18 innings.

Mathews has had a golden run in 2014. Apart from his good showing in the ODIs, he has also crossed the 1000-run mark in Tests.

The skipper first ODI hundred saw sudden acceleration in the end as he scored his last 59 runs in just 19 balls.

Former Sri Lanka all-rounder Russel Arnold, expressed his views through social micro-blogging site, Twitter.
