New Delhi: Even as Virat Kohli was the sole and natural choice before the selectors for the captain`s job in Asia Cup after skipper MS Dhoni`s eleventh hour withdrawal due to injury, Kohli has an onerous task at hand which is fraught with complex challenges.
There`s no doubt that Team India`s morale after facing crushing defeats abroad is at lowest ebb. In these negative circumstances, Kohli may find it hard to inject a new vigour in the team which is already facing the music back home.
Onus lies on Kohli to dilute the loss of MS Dhoni with his improvisatory skills. Dhoni`s absence from the middle - order can have a telling effect on Indian batting. And it will be interesting to see how Kohli will manage to mitigate this impact. He will have to be in sync with players who are so far only aware of Dhoni`s leadership style.
No wonder, he led the Indian side on a few occasions, especially against Zimbabwe, but this time Kohli faces a genuine test with strong teams like Pakistan and Sri Lanka being powerful contenders for the Asia Cup title and not to forget, Bangladeshi boys who possess no-less heft than these sides in home conditions.
Moreover, Kohli needs to ensure that the burden of captaincy doesn`t spoil his batting. Since India`s tour of Australia in 2012 where Kohli showed remarkable batting prowess, he has successfully marched on without looking back. Hence Kohli should make sure that he continues to fire with the bat.
As the nation watches Team India`s `heir-apparent` leading the side, Asia Cup is definitely going to be a litmus Test for Virat Kohli.
