BCCI wants to be treated as charitable org

Swati Chaturvedi

New Delhi: Incredible but true; the BCCI`s claims get wilder by the day. One of the richest sports organisations in the world which does not want to hold itself open to public scrutiny has asked the Income Tax department to treat it as a "charitable organisation" in order to seek tax exemption under section 12 A of the Income tax act.

The very fact that the IT department even considered the plea is testimony to the political and governmental clout and heft enjoyed by the BCCI.

This was revealed by the government in reply to a RTI petition and the petitioner has termed the government`s answer as misleading and has filed another appeal asking if the government would give the tax exemption to BCCI as a charity.
