Bell hails Gary Ballance`s `tough character` during `limp` Alice Springs warm-up

Sydney: England batsman Ian Bell, who acted as skipper in place of Alastair Cook in his side`s two-day warm-up in Alice Springs, has hailed his team mate Gary Ballance for top-scoring with 55 in the first innings of the tour match, which was its only half-century.

Despite Graeme Swann`s 4-56 and fellow tweaker Monty Panesar 3-41, another inept performance from the tourists` pacemen was the talking point of their 42-run first-innings loss which finally petered out into a draw in the warm-up in Alice Springs a week after a humbling defeat in the first Ashes Test.

According to News.com.au, Bell said that Ballance has performed well, adding that although he had a tough start in the beginning, to go out there and bat for a long period of time on a wicket that was not easy showed his toughness of character.

Bell further said that he hopes Ballance gets selected for the second Test as it is the toughness of character, which is most necessary in a Test team.
