‘Bench players’ should be given opportunities: Azharuddin

New Delhi: Former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin on Saturday said the bench players within the Indian cricket squad should be given opportunities to showcase their talent and gain experience for the future.

“We will get to know that how good the bench players are. I think unless and until, we will not give the bench players the chance, they will not grow and gain experience,” Azharuddin said.

Azharuddin, however, appeared confident that the inexperienced lot of players selected for the tri-nation series being played in Zimbabwe would perform better in the upcoming matches of the series.

“I hope that new players play well in second match. I also feel bad when India lose any match, but new players should be given chance as they are inexperience and if they play more matches they will gain experience,” he said.

Azharuddin’s comments came after an inexperienced Indian side slumped to an embarrassing six-wicket defeat against Zimbabwe in the first match of the tri-series on Friday.

Team India plays Sri Lanka in their next match on Sunday.
