Blow for Sri Lanka as Mathews ruled out of World Cup final
Mumbai: Barely a day ahead of the much-anticipated World Cup final, Sri Lanka have been given permission by International Cricket Council (ICC) to replace injured allrounder Angelo Mathews with off-spinner Suraj Randiv in the Sri Lankan squad for the World Cup final against India.
Mathews, who is an important member of the ‘fragile’ Sri Lankan middle-order as well as a good back-up pacer, left the field during the semifinal with a quadriceps muscle injury when Sri Lanka were fielding.
With Mathews not recovering soon enough, Sri Lanka had sought approval from the ICC`s technical committee for swapping him with Randiv. The ICC on Friday gave them a go-ahead to replace Mathews with Randiv.
Randiv, a good ODI spinner, has played 21 one-day games for Sri Lanka, taking 22 wickets at an average of 33.5.
However, despite struggling with a number of niggles, including injuries to his knee and hamstring, Muralitharan said he is determined to play the final as this is the most important match of his career.
“I will play come what may”, a confident Murali said on Friday.
The final will be Murali’s last international match in Lankan jersey.
