Roseau (Dominica): Opener Kraigg Brathwaite and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh were dropped from the West Indies cricket squad for the 11-match tour of England starting next week.
Dinesh Ramdin replaced Baugh, and Marlon Samuels was recalled after a three-week stint in the Indian Premier League, during which he missed the lost home test series against Australia.
The new caps in the 15-man squad were Trinidad`s Shannon Gabriel, the strapping 1.93-meter (6-foot-4) fast bowler who took 24 wickets in the regional four-day championship in February and March, and Assad Fudadin, the left-handed batsman. Fudadin was in the squad for the just-finished third test against Australia without making the final 11.
Clyde Butts, chairman of selectors, believed the spring conditions in England would suit Gabriel more than a spinner such as Devendra Bishoo, who met Australia only in the first test and took one wicket.
Bishoo would benefit from regaining confidence playing for West Indies A when India A visit in June, Butts said, as would Brathwaite, the teenager who was bowled for three straight ducks by Australia in the tests.
"Baugh has been good behind the stumps, but his batting has not quite lived up to expectations, hence the selection of Ramdin," Butts added. Kirk Edwards, who missed the final two tests against Australia with a knee injury, was named as vice captain.
West Indies starts with a three-day match against Sussex on May 5. There will be three tests at Lord`s, Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, three one-day internationals, finishing with a Twenty20 on June 24 in Nottingham.
