New Delhi: There is no denying Kings XI Punjab were the surprise package of IPL 2014. After disappointing performances in previous editions, the Punjab franchise entertained fans with a fearless and positive brand of cricket. Riding on the power of a star-studded batting line-up, Kings XI stormed into the final of the league. Despite being the most consistent team in the tournament, they could not cross the final hurdle as Kolkata Knight Riders got the better of them.
As Kings XI make their debut appearance in the Champions League T20 this year, all eyes will be on them to light up the tournament just like IPL. However, most teams will be prepared to combat the George Bailed-led side as there is plenty of evidence of their prowess based on a good season in the IPL, where they were took most teams by surprise as they were a newly assembled unit in the pre-season auction.
A strong Australian core of George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson will once again form the backbone of this team. They will be aided by explosive hitters in the form of Virender Sehwag and David Miller. The young Indian talent of Wriddhiman Saha, Akshar Patel, Manan Vora and Rishi Dhawan will lend much needed balance to Punjab. The team was expertly managed by Sanjay Banger in the IPL and his tactics will play a key role in shaping their fortunes in the CLT20.
However, unlike the IPL, the CLT20 is a different beast and a bad string of results guarantees exit from the tournament at an early stage. Apart from the Indian teams, Punjab will face stiff competition from Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers, Dolphins and Cape Cobras who are known to be traditional T20 specialists. This is the sixth edition of the CLT20 and past winners among the IPL teams include Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
Will Kings XI Punjab replicate their IPL 7 form to be the third Indian team to win the Champions League T20 or will the expectation of winning the tournament in their first attempt prove to be a difficult ask?
