Dale Steyn finds no place in South Africa's ODI squad for upcoming triangular series featuring West Indies, Australia

SA have opted for three specialist spinners in Imran Tahir, Aaron Phangiso and Tabraiz expecting the Caribbean pitches to be slow in nature.

New Delhi: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday announced ODI squad for the upcoming triangular ODI series vs Australia where Tabraiz Shamsi received his maiden call-up while premier pacer Dale Steyn failed to make the cut.

The triangular series is scheduled to be played in the Caribbean islands next month which will feature West Indies and Australia as well.

The 26-year-old left-arm wrist spinner, currently playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016, will become the 116th player to represent the Proteas in the 50-overs format if he gains selection into the starting XI.

Speaking on the exclusion of Steyn from the squad, CSA selection committee convener, Linda Zondi said that he was vital to South Africa's plans for the longest format of the game and still had a chance of making it to the ODI squad for home series vs Australia later this year.

“In the short term our immediate focus must be to get back among the top ranked Test nations and for this reason we are resting Dale Steyn for this tour. He is vital to our ambitions in the longest format and he is going to have a heavy workload in the months ahead with home and away series against New Zealand, a home series against Sri Lanka and an away Test series in Australia which is where we need to perform,” explained Zondi. “He is certainly not out of the ODI picture and could well feature in the home series against Australia later this year.”
