Dejected Sri Lankan cricket fan dies of heart attack
Colombo: Heartbroken as Sri Lanka made futile efforts to prevent India from winning the cricket World Cup, a 32-year-old man reportedly died here due to cardiac arrest.
Keerthi Gunathilake, who was holidaying with his wife in the north-central town of Hingurakgoda, collapsed at his lodge after he realised that Sri Lanka was losing to India on Saturday, state-owned daily reported.
Gunathilake, a resident of Piliyandala on outskirts of Colombo, was ecstatic when Sri Lanka resurrected its inning and got the wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early, but became despaired as India tightened its grip on the match.
He suddenly collapsed during the later part of India`s inning when Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni ensured that there be no more hiccup on the way to the coveted cup. He was given medical attention but died, the report said.
Meanwhile, the Colombo National Hospital said more than 400 people were admitted for treatment on Saturday night -- twice than on any other day, hospital authorities said.
India won the World Cup final by 6 wickets after 28 years.
