Sydney: Australian spinner Xavier Doherty has said he would love to prove his credentials in Test cricket but admitted he hasn’t done enough to earn a call in the Australian Test team.
He has made a good start in the Commonwealth Bank Series one-day series against India and Sri Lanka, with figures of 2-36 and 2-24, to help Australia to consecutive victories.
Doherty already has two Test caps to his name against England in 2010, but struggled to make an impact, claiming just three wickets with an average of 102.
He is now gunning for a second stint in the Test matches but confessed that he needs to do more. And with spinner Nathan Lyon doing well in the longer format of the game, Doherty is happy to bide his time.
“Nathan Lyon`s done a great job since he`s come in and he`s going to be a tough one to move out of there,” Doherty said on Saturday.
“It`s not really in the frame for me at the moment. I`m just concentrating on what I can do in the colored clothes. “But hopefully down the track another opportunity will present itself. I wasn`t that rapt with the way I bowled when I did get my chance,” he added.
