Assam 159 for four against Tamil Nadu

Chennai: After yielding 162-run first innings lead to Tamil Nadu, Assam were 159 for four in their second essay at close on the penultimate day of their four-day Elite-A Ranji Trophy cricket match here on Wednesday.

Former Tamil Nadu batsman Sridharan Sriram 87(170b, 13X4) and Tarjinder Singh (23) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.

Pacer Ranjeet Mali ripped through the Tamil Nadu batting line up after they resumed at overnight 300 for 4 in reply to Assam`s 184 all out. The hosts declared their innings at 346 for nine.

Mali maintained a steady line and length to dismiss R Satish, who failed to add to his overnight individual score of 74 (145b, 7x4, 1x6) and then scalped R Ashwin and C Ganapathy. Mali bowled 8.1 overs of which three were maidens and had given away just nine runs to claim three wickets.

Anirudha Srikkanth, coasting towards his second Ranji century, played forward to a Sujay Tarafdar delivery, which kept low and was wrapped on pads. He made 95 (179b, 7X4,2X 6).

Assam, in their second essay, lost Parvez Aziz for just two runs. Opener Dhiraj Jadhav (38, 2x4) and left handed Sriram steadied the innings adding 112 runs for the second wicket in 42.5 overs.

Jadhav went for a big hit and was caught by C Ganapathy at mid-on region off Ashwin for 38.

Visiting team captain and former Mumabi star, Amol Mazumdar failed miserably with the bat yet again as he was adjudged leg before to Lakshmipathi Balaji for 2.

Balaji dimissed Deepak Sharma (2) in the same over.
