Kolkata: An unbroken 121-run stand between Laxmi Ratan Shukla and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha took Bengal out of the woods as they reached 257 for five in their first innings on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Assam here on Tuesday.
Put into bat at the Eden Gardens, Bengal were in trouble at 126 for five midway into the post-lunch session when captain Manoj Tiwary was dismissed for 50.
Shukla (batting 75) and Saha (batting 60) then took charge to guide Bengal to safety with an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 121 runs from 39.5 overs as the home side reached 257 in 88 overs.
Shukla’s 75, which he made from 130 balls, was studded with 13 fours while Saha hit a six and six fours in his 128-ball stay at the crease.
For Assam, Ranjitkumar Mali claimed two for 60 while Abu Nechim Ahmed, Dhiraj Goswami and Arlen Konwar scalped a wicket each.
