Goa to meet Tripura in a must-win match
Porvorim: Hosts Goa will aim for an outright victory to boost their chances of making it to the knockout stages during their final Ranji Trophy Plate A league match against bottom-placed Tripura at the GCA academy ground here beginning on Wednesday.
For Goa, who are placed third with 11 points from four matches behind Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan who have 15 points each from as many matches, to qualify in the knockout stage the hosts not only need an outright victory but also the defeat of either Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan in their respective final round match.
Following an outright win against Jharkhand at home and three points against Hyderabad in an away match, Goa have put themselves in the fray to qualify for the business stage of the country’s premier domestic cricket tourney.
“Our boys have played to the plan in both the last two matches which gave us a chance to qualify for the next stage. Our batsmen played well in the last two matches putting up a huge score and we are hoping they continue to score against Tripura against whom we are expecting an outright win,” said Goa coach Rajesh Kamath.
Reagan Pinto, who has scored three centuries in the last two matches will lead the hosts’ batting along with Ajay Ratra, Vaibhav Naik and Rahul Keni, who have also contributed to the teams cause.
Left-arm tweaker Shadab Jakati, who took 10 wickets against Jharkhand will be the key in the bowling department.
“If he display the same form which he did against Jharkhand then there is no doubt we are going to win outright,” Kamath said.
