Ahmedabad: A 94-run knock by skipper Jaidev Shah helped Saurashtra score a modest 262 in their first innings on day two of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Saurashtra at the Lalbhai Contractor stadium in Surat on Thursday.
In reply, Gujarat lost opener Jay Desai (9) with 20 runs on board. Priyank Panchal (6) and Salil Yadav (0) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.
Earlier, Gujarat won the toss and opted to field after the first day’s play was washed out due to rain.
Saurashtra began shakily as Ashraf Makda bowled opener Chirag Pathak (5) in the fourth over of the game.
Experienced Sitanshu Kotak (25) and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (13) too failed to contribute much to the team’s cause.
The situation turned worse for Saurashtra as Bhushan Chauhan (41) was caught behind off Ishwar Chaudhary to have the team reeling at 104 for the loss of four wickets.
It was here that Shah began his rescue act as he shared a brilliant 119-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Sagar Jogiyani (39).
Their partnership was broken by off-spinner Mohnish Parmar who had Jogiyani caught in the 66th over. Shah too was dismissed soon leaving Saurashtra down to 228/6.
Shah’s innings of 94 run comprised of 11 fours and three sixes.
The tailenders could not do much as Gujarat’s innings folded for the addition of 34 more runs.
For Gujarat, young Ishwar Choudhary was the pick of the bowlers claiming four wickets while conceding just 58 runs. Salil Yadav bagged two wickets, while experienced lot of Siddharth Trivedi, Ashraf Makda and Parmar shared a wicket apiece.
