Ahmedabad: In a close match, Gujarat defeated Saurashtra by two wickets with a magnificent bowling and batting performance securing five points on the last day of the super league Group A Ranji Trophy match played at the Lalbhai Contractor stadium in Surat.
Saurashtra was in a strong position on the penultimate day as it had secured a first innings lead of 70 runs and had ended the day at 60 for two in their second essay with Bhushan Chauhan batting on 22 and Shitanshu Kotak on one.
However, menacing bowling performance by Gujarat bowlers led by Salil Yadav and Siddarth Trivedi brought the end to Saurashtra`s second innings for just 125 runs, with no batsmen able to make significant contribution.
Only P S Mehta and S D Jogiayani offered some resistance to fine bowling performance by scoring 17 runs each.
Medium pacer Yadav scalped four wickets, while Trivedi got three, and spinner Mohanish Parmar got two wickets and the remaining one was taken by I H Chowdhury.
Gujarat got the target of 196 runs to win the match against Saurashtra whose bowling was mainly dependent on Ravindra Jadeja and Jaydev Unadkat.
The match was poised to go down the wire as Gujarat lost four wickets at a score of 65. A partnership of 82 runs between captain Parthiv Patel (42) and Bhavin Thaker (42) steadied Gujarat`s innings.
