Bangalore: Manish Pandey and CM Gautam hit unbeaten centuries each to put Karnataka in the driver’s seat against Orissa on the second day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, here on Thursday.
Karnataka reached 348 for five at stumps on day two with Pandey (144 not out) and Gautam (144 not out) at crease.
Resuming at an overnight score of 18 for two, in reply to Orissa’s first innings total of 191, Karnataka lost three early wickets in the morning session but thereafter completely dominated the day’s proceedings riding on Pandey and Gautam’s brilliant tons.
Yesterday’s not out batsmen -- Ganesh Satish (25) and Robin Uthappa (9) though started off well on Thursday but failed to sustain and soon both of them fell in quick succession.
To make the matters worse for the hosts, even Amit Verma (5) departed almost immediately, to leave Karnataka reeling at 54 for five.
And at that stage it looked like Orissa would run away with the first innings lead but Pandey and Gautam had other plans.
The duo not only consolidated the innings but went on to bat the rest of the day, remaining unbeaten on identical score of 144 each.
Both the batters complimented each other during their stay in the middle. While Pandey mixed caution with aggression, Gautam freed his arms and went for his shots.
Pandey ended the day on 223-ball 144 not out, including 12 hits to the fence and 5 sixes, while Gautam was unbeaten on 144 from just 193 balls studded with 21 four and a six.
For Orissa, Alok Sahoo claimed two wickets on Thursday, while Basanth Mohanty chipped in with just one.
