Spinners call the shot in under 19 tourney

Mumbai: Spinners dominated the first day of the four-team Sportstar Trophy, MCA Selection Trial U-19 tournament, in first round matches.

Left-arm spinner Aditya Dhumal excelled for Vijay Manjrekar XI at Fort Vijay ground, Azad Maidan, grabbing five wickets for 51 runs.

He teased batsmen with disciplined bowling in three spells and, with support from medium pacer Saurabh Netravalkar (2-42) and Pratik Gawli (2-16), restricted Vijay Merchant XI to 191.

Neelkanth Parab top-scored with 59 for Merchant XI.

In the other match, Dattu Phadkar XI off-spinner Mairaj Khan kept Khandu Rangnekar XI in check at Total Vengsarkar Academy, with a four-wicket haul, giving away 30 runs in 17 overs. Phadkar XI were 79-2 at close.

The tournament is in its silver jubilee year.
