Tamil Nadu beat Andhra, qualify for knock out stage

Margao: An all-round performance by Bharat Shankar and his first wicket stand of 106 with D Ganga Raju propelled Tamil Nadu to score a fluent 64 runs win over Andhra Pradesh which put them on top of the table in the final encounter of the South Zone U-19 Vinu Mankad limited overs tournament, played at Margao’s Nehru Stadium here on Monday.

Tamil Nadu, who finished their league engagement, topped the South Zone Group with 23 points and thus qualified for the knock out stage.

Tamil Nadu, won the toss and elected to bat first put up a modest score of 223 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs.

Tamil Nadu got off to a bright start with openers D Ganga Raju and Bharat Shankar putting on 106 for the first wicket stand before Ganga Raju was out for 46.

Thereafter two quick wickets fell in quick succession before Bharat Shankar who hit four boundaries for his 86 found able partner Indrajit(54) who added 63 runs for the fourth wicket partnership.

P Snehasis was the most successful bowler for Andhra claiming three wickets. Simran took two wickets while Shamsunder and Vinodkumar took one wicket each.

Set a target of 224 to win, nothing went right for Andhra as they lost wickets at regular interval to be all out for 159 in 44.3 overs.

G Charan who was the top scorer with 36 runs put up a stiff resistance along with M Basha(33) were the main scorer.

Vinod Kumar(29) and A Basha(23) added valuable runs.

Bharat Shankar who took three wickets for 33 runs was the most successful bowler for Tamil Nadu.

Ashwin K grabbed two wickets while M Mohammed and Sharat Madik took one wicket.
