Review: ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ is a tedious burlesque

If you have already watched the teasers of ‘Quick Gun Murugan’, I am sure that you will be tempted to go and watch the South Indian cowboy flick. But even with all its wit and antics, the movie is a big Box Office dud! Except spoofing typical Bollywood clichés, the movie has nothing to offer as it fails to deliver with all its overcooked storyline and overblown cinematography.

Directed by Shashanka Gosh, ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ is based on a popular character created by Shashanka Ghosh and Rajesh Devraj for Channel V way back in the year 1994. In the movie, Murugan (Rajendra Prasad) is a dosa loving pure-vegetarian Tamil cowboy who is pitted against Rice Plate Reddy, a man who heads the McDosa Corporation and nurses desire to make non-vegetarian dosas. However, aided by Mango Dolly (Rambha), Murugan is successful in foiling the evil plans of Rice Plate Reddy. ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ is nothing more than a trail of parody, which takes potshots at conventional styles and affections in the history of Indian cinema. However, pulling a 90-minute spoof is not an easy task and this proves to be the bane of ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ as with an insubstantial plot, jokes become unbearable and so does the movie! ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ might be whacky and original, yet, it fails to capture the very essence of a full-bodied burlesque that could be a rib-tickling affair. Apart from the weird antics of Murugan, one finds our cowboy torn between his Locket Lover (Anu Menon of Lola Kutty fame) and Mango Dolly and an overdose of hackneyed dialogues and equally pedestrian scenes. Well, when it comes to acting, all the actors are true to their larger-than-life characters as Rajendra Prasad is simply brilliant as Quick Gun Murugan who simply loves quoting his favourite phrase ‘Mind It’ every now and then and so is Anu Menon as Locket Lover and Rambha as Mango Dolly. Apart from it, Raju Sundaram as Rowdy MBA is worth mentioning. Ultimately, ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ is in a dire need of comic effect. The movie could have been a delightful watch only if it had a crisp script and characters came with an author backed role. Nonetheless, ‘Quick Gun Murugan’ is a mindless affair and do ‘Mind It’! Review: Two cheers for this one.
