Headingley: Stumps: At Stumps on Day 1, South Africa were 262/5 with Alviro Petersen batting on 124 and Jacques Rudolph on 1.

Tea Update: At tea, South Africa were 163/3. AB de Villiers (4*) and Alviro Petersen (76*) were on crease.

The three wickets to fall were that of:

Graeme Smith (52) c Bell b Bresnan

Hashim Amla (9) run out (Bresnon)

Jacques Kallis (19) c Cook b Anderson



Day 1, Lunch

Opener Alviro Petersen scored a fifty as South Africa started second Test on a positive note. At lunch, the tourists were 84 for no loss. Petersen was unbeaten on 59 while skipper Graeme Smith was playing on 24 when lunch was taken.

Toss

Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bowl first leaving out off spinner Graeme Swann from the playing XI and going with four pacers.

After being comprehensively beaten in the first Test, England will be eager to bounce back against the visiting South African team.
