England vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test: Sachin Tendulkar's record remains unbroken; Alastair Cook misses out again

New Delhi: Alastair Cook's bid to become the youngest batsman to score 10,000 Test runs will continue to wait longer as the England captain once again wasted his chance. Needing 20 more runs for the record, Cook got out after scoring 15 runs on the first day's play of second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

Cook — 31 years and 154 days on Friday — needed 20 runs to break Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar's record.

He missed the opportunity in the first Test at Headingly, which England won by innings and 88 runs. In that match, he could only managed 16 runs off 52 balls in a typical Test innings.

After opting to bat first, he once again got out cheaply, scoring only 15 runs off 42 balls.

Tendulkar was 31 years, 10 months and 20 days old when he scored his 10,000th run in 2005.

He is now the first Englishman, and 12th player to reach the milestone.

Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid, Mahela Jayawardene, Sunil Gavaskar, Jacques Kallis, Allan Border, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Steve Waugh are the other batsmen to have reached the milestone.

England are hosting Sri Lanka for a three Tests, five One-Day Internationals and lone Twenty20 series.
