Flower backs Stuart Broad to play against India

London: England coach Andy Flower has backed his out of form fast bowler Stuart Broad, saying that he will not be dropped from England’s Test side despite his omission from Saturday’s deciding ODI victory over Sri Lanka.

Nottinghamshire spin all-rounder Samit Patel was preferred over Broad as England completed a 16-run triumph at Old Trafford to wrap up a 3-2 series win against Sri Lanka.

Flower will now focus on bettering the world’s No1 side, India, when the best-of-four Test series starts at Lord’s on Thursday, the Daily Express reports.

James Anderson will lead the attack but Chris Tremlett, Tim Bresnan, Steve Finn, Jade Dernbach and Broad are all seemingly competing for the final two pacer spots in the team.

“Stuart was left out of the side because we wanted to bring in a spinner and we thought that Dernbach would be more effective in these conditions,” said Flower.

“A nice by-product of him missing this game is that he will have a four-day break from bowling between the fourth one-day international that he played and the four-day game that he will play for Nottinghamshire.

“After that, he can have another four-day break to rest those niggles and then get into training for the Test match at Lord’s,’ Flower said.
