Former Oz cricketer Lawson irked by Ponting’s self-indulgence
Sydney: Former Australian fast bowler Geoff Lawson has said he is annoyed by Ricky Ponting’s self-indulgence at a press conference after being dropped from the Australian one-day squad.
Lawson believes Ponting should have already retired from the Test cricket. “I thought the press conference was one of the most self-indulgent little pieces of self-interest I`ve seen for a long time,” Lawson told Sydney`s Sky Sports Radio “I listened very intently to it and there was a lot of "I"..."I this" and "I that" and "how I`m good for the team’, and I`m really annoyed by it,” he said.
Lawson said if Ponting is true to his word about going out on top, then now`s the time. He also urged Australian selectors to look towards the future for Australian cricket, and added that Ponting should not be selected for the West Indies tour if he doesn’t perform well in Sheffield Shield games. “If he doesn`t make runs in the three [Sheffield] Shield games, I`m not sure why he should be going to the West Indies,” he said.
