Gambhir ruled out of West Indies tour
New Delhi: Prolific Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has been ruled out of the West Indies tour owing to a shoulder injury picked up during the IPL. A lot of suspense was built around Gambhir’s availability for the tour, of which he was to be the captain in the ODI and T-20 leg.
In his absence Suresh Raina is likely to fill in as stand in captain with Virat Kohli being the vice captain. According to reports, Yuvraj Singh was offered the vice captain’s post but he duly declined.
It is also being said that the Tamil Nadu opener, Abhinav Mukund might get a look in as a cover for Gautam Gambhir.
Earlier on Thursday, Indian cricket team’s physiotherapist, Ashish Kaushik had met Gambhir to check the extent of his injury and had corroborated the report sent to him by KKR physio, Andrew Leipus. Andrew had advised 4-6 weeks rest for Gambhir for the shoulder injury.
When Gambhir’s injury scare came to light, questions were raised on why he was allowed to play with the injury in IPL. Gambhir had defended himself saying the KKR management had kept him in dark regarding the extend and seriousness of the injury.
KKR had retorted that BCCI was kept in the loop all along.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh on Friday became the fourth player to opt out of the ODI series in the West Indies. According to media reports, Yuvraj Singh opts out of the series due to illness.
Virender Sehwag and Ashish Nehra were already ruled out due to injuries.
Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Zaheer Khan were already rested for the ODI series.
