Gayle will boost our confidence: Vettori
Kolkata: Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori on Friday heaped praise on Chris Gayle for single-handedly winning the game against Kolkata Knight Riders and said the roping in of the explosive West Indian would boost the confidence of his side in the IPL.
He said RCB were "lucky" to have the destructive West Indies opener, who hit a match-winning 55-ball 102 against KKR, in his side as a replacement of injured Australian paceman Dirk Nannes.
"We never knew until obviously Dirk Nannes got injured. You can see Gayle`s value today. The way he played today can be an intimidating prospect for a number of teams. We were lucky to have him," Vettori said of Gayle who went unsold in the IPL auction in January.
"Once he got in, he is so destructive, it`s quite intimidating for the bowlers. Once he is gets going on a flat track he showed how devastating he can be. He is very strong to hit the ball very long long way. It`s great for the team to have him and a confidence boost for the side," Vettori said at the post-match press conference.
Vettori, however, said his side need to plug the loopholes in the bowling department. "Yes, as as a bowling unit we got to be better. We can`t always afford to give away 172 runs. It was a very good score and I thought it`s going to be a tough chase. Dilshan and Gayle`s partnership enabled us to win comfortably. Dilshan also played really well to give Gayle a lot of strike," he said.
"We wanted to bat second thinking that the wicket will get better, as it did. But I thought the wicket would get better after last night`s drizzle and under lights it got better," said the New Zealander.
Vettori praised the left-arm spin bowling by former ICL player Syed Mohammad who made his IPL debut today. "To come and ball in the third over was really fantastic. Probably he allowed us to get back into the game. His bowling was outstanding."
