London: Former England all-rounder Ian Botham believes that newly appointed director of cricket Andrew Strauss should drop Alastair Cook as the team captain and replace him with Joe Root.

Hailing Strauss' decision to ditch Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores as the 'right call', Botham observed that he disagrees with the guarantee the former captain has given to Cook as captain, the Mirror reported.

Botham stated that he hoped Strauss might be revising that opinion at some point later this summer, insisting that vice- captain Joe Root could be promoted sooner rather than later.
