A fine innings from Mathews came to an end. It was a good over from Steyn, but he was unlucky off the last ball as Kulasekara got a thick edge off the last ball which rushed past third man for a boundary! Nine runs from the over. It is a respectable total – a score which would help somebody like Lasith Malinga to aim at the stumps!

Morne Morkel picked his second wicket of the match when Perera missed the line of a ball which hit his stumps. Eight runs from the over.

==============================================================

Over 15 || Score 117/4

Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal have accelerated the pace of the innings and they are looking in good momentum at the moment. Sri Lanka need these two to stay for another few overs if Sri Lanka entertain any chances of reaching a formidable total.

==============================================================

50 for Parera.

In between, Kusal Parera has reached his half-century by taking a single off JP Duminy towards leg side in the fifth ball of eighth over. In his 29-ball innings, the opener has struck five boundaries and three sixes.

Over 9.5 || Score 83/3

Imran Tahir provided the much needed break for his team by removing the veteran Sangakkara.

Kumar Sangakkara c Lonwabo Tsotsobe b Imran Tahir 14(18)

Sangakkara, in a bid to up the tempo, picked a wide delivery from Tahir which took a top edge. Tsotsobe took the catch at third man as a jubilant Tahir celebrated in his usual style ... running wild.

===================================================

Mahela Jayawardene c Dale Steyn b Morne Morkel 9 (9b)

===================================================

Over 4 || Score 38/1

A relatively better over for South Africa as Lonwabo Tsotsobe conceding only eight runs.

So far, it's all about Kusal Perera. The opener has displayed a full range of shots.

===================================================

Over 3 || Score 30/1

AB de Villiers brought Morne Morkel in place of Dale Steyn in the third over. But the change of bowler didn't particularly worked for the fielding team as Kusal continued to play fearlessly.

The southpaw in on 25 from 13 balls.

===================================================

Over 2 || Score 22/1

As expected, Lonwabo Tsotsobe shared the new ball with Steyn. The left-handed bowler started his over with a wide, but succeeded in keeping the Sri Lankan's quite by keeping the line and length.

In the centre, Kusal has his imperious compatriot Mahela Jayawardene for company.

===================================================

Over 1 || Score 17/1

Dale Steyn started the proceedings with a straight delivery- onto the stumps, but Sri Lankan opener Kusal Perera hit two successive boundaries off the second and third deliveries, and followed it up with a huge six.

Thus Sri Lanka are off to a flying start.

But in the last ball, Steyn yorked Kusal's opening partner Tillakaratne Dilshan for a nought.

Tillakaratne Dilshan b Dale Steyn 0 (1b)

===================================================

===================================================

Chittagong: As the tournament proper enters second day into the competition, now it`s the turn of heavyweights to have their share of bricks and bouquets.

In the first of Group 1 clash, South Africa will take on Sri Lanka, with the Islanders starting as the overwhelming favourites. Sri Lanka were the finalists in two previous occasions, losing to Pakistan in 2009 and West Indies in 2012. So, despite their final jinx, Sri Lankans have always been one of the favourites in the tournament.

Talking about the `jinx`, the Proteas have always been associated with luck and its various other calculations or miscalculations. Besides, they have also not done too well in this competition, for that matter of fact, in any of the ICC tournament. Probably that`s the reason why they are often dismissed as the eternal chokers.

However, the poor past record cannot discount any team and their prospects thereof. Both the teams played two warm-up matches. Sri Lanka lost to defending champions West Indies but earlier, they have defeated continental rivals, India. South Africa defeated both Bangladesh and Pakistan.
