India won the match by 130 runs with 9.4 overs to spare.

Over 40.2 || Score 177 (Parnell 17)

Jadeja scalped the final wicket of the day, thanks to a LBW call. All in all, it's been a satisfactory outing for MS Dhoni & Co.

India finally beat South Africa in a World Cup match in their fourth attempt.

Imran Tahir lbw b Ravindra Jadeja 8 (10b)

Over 38 || Score 162/9 (Morkel 2; Parnell 10)

Ashwin got his third wicket of the day. A rather ambitious sweep for a tail-ender in Morne Morkel. Result, clean ball.

Morne Morkel b Ravichandran Ashwin 2 (5b)

And thus arrived the last South African batsman -- Imran Tahir -- in the centre. They now required 146 more runs from 12 overs, at a rate of just over 12 an over.

Over 37 || Score 161/8 (Morkel 2; Parnell 10)

Mohammed Shami returned to remove Dale Steyn. Easy catch for Shikhar Dhawan at cover point. India in sight of breaking the Proteas jinx at World Cup.

Over 34 || Score 153/7 (Parnell 4; Steyn 0)

Two wickets in Ashwin's seventh over. First David Miller got himself run out, then Vernon Philander was adjudged leg before the wicket.

Dhoni effected another run out from a good Umesh Yadav throw to send dangerous Miller home. Then, two balls later Ashwin tossed the ball up, ball hitting Philander inside the crease.

David Miller run out 22 (23b)

Vernon Philander lbw b Ravichandran Ashwin 0 (2b)

Dale Steyn is the new man for South Africa.

Over 33 || Score 151/5 (Miller 21, Parnell 4)

Another bowling change for India. Dhoni brought in Shami and the pace bowler has leaked three runs only. Dhoni has used five bowlers and none of them disappointed the skipper. But the early inroads made by Shami provided a real impetus to India's cause.

Over 32 || Score 147/5 (Miller 21, Parnell 1)

Ravichandran Ashwin got his man. Duminy was little adventurous to play a reverse sweep against the quality of Ashwin. Easy catch for Raina at slip.

JP Duminy c Suresh Raina b Ravichandran Ashwin 6 (15b)

Now South Africa in total disarray, losing five top batsmen. And they still need 160 more runs at more than eight an over. Wayne Parnell is the new man.

Over 31 || Score 147/4 (Miller 21, Duminy 6)

David Miller is on his own. His innings will be of prime importance in South Africa's chase. In his company, Duminy will need to play sensible innings.

In the last two overs, South Africa have accumulated 13 runs, eight off Ashwin's fifth over and five off Mohit's seventh over.

They now need another 161 from 19 overs.

Over 29 || Score 134/4 (Miller 13, Duminy 0)

It will go down as a good captaincy. Dhoni brought in Mohit and with the first ball, removed the in-form du Plessis -- who had just completed his fifty.

Mohit has taken two big wickets, those of Amla and du Plessis.

Faf du Plessis c Shikhar Dhawan b Mohit Sharma 55 (71b)

Easy catch for Dhawan at mid-off. Jean-Paul Duminy is the new man.

Two good overs for South Africa yielded 16 runs. In the 26th over, Ashwin conceded six runs then, in the next over, Jadeja gave away 10 runs.

du Plessis reached his fifty off the last delivery of the 26th over, while Miller took special care of Jadeja in the next over.

Over 25 || Score 115/3 (du Plessis 48, Miller 3)

A couple of tide overs keep the pressure on Proteas. Jadeja, for sure, is pick of the Indian bowlers. Just completed seven overs, conceding only 25.

South Africa now need 193 more runs from 25 overs. And the asking rate is just under 8 an over.

Over 23 || Score 108/3 (du Plessis 44, Miller 0)

India struck! Proteas skipper AB de Villiers returned to the pavilion after finding him short of ground.

Good team-effort from the Indians. MS Dhonui's quick glove-work only complimented Mohit's throw from the deep. Run out.

AB de Villiers run out 30 (38b)

Earlier, four dot balls piled pressure on AB. David Miller is the new man.

Over 22 || Score 107/2 (de Villiers 29; du Plessis 44)

Over 19 || Score 84/2 (de Villiers 20; du Plessis 30)

A 44-run partnership between AB and du Plessis is sure to help some South African nerves calm down. The duo played out two five-run overs to keep the scoreboard ticking and keeping their chances alive.

Over 17 || Score 74/2 (de Villiers 17; du Plessis 23)

Big over for South Africa. It's needed  and taking the charge is du Plessis.

Jadeja conceded four runs, all singles.

Over 11 || Score 43/2 (de Villiers 1; du Plessis 8)

Wicket for Mohit Sharma. Hashim Amla out.

Mohit's persistence, that of bowling short balls paid off. Amla tried to pull, but it ended up offering a catch to Shami at long leg. Good catch.

Hashim Amla c Mohammed Shami b Mohit Sharma 22 (28b)

Over 10 || Score 38/1 (Amla 22; du Plessis 5)

Biggest over so far for South Africa. Amla finally opened his arm to play some attacking shots. Off the penultimate ball of the over, he cuts through the square leg area for a four. Eight runs from Shami's over.

South Africa now need another 270 runs from 40 overs.

Over 9 || Score 30/1 (Amla 16; du Plessis 4)

Another two-run over, this time from Mohit. Amla took a double off the second ball, then the Indian bowler managed to keep the South African quite for the remainder of the over.

The over also witnessed a missed chance for India to send back Amla at the non-strikers end. Raina failed to dislogde the bail after Rahane stopped a crunching drive from Amla.

Over 8 || Score 28/1 (Amla 14; du Plessis 4)

Another two-run over from Shami. du Plessis and Amla shared a single each, but Amla has been exceptional today. In his four-over spell so far, he has given only seven runs and took that vital wicket of de Kock.

Over 7 || Score 26/1 (Amla 13; du Plessis 3)

First hit to the fence for Amla as the South African opener looked to increase the run rate. Seven runs added to the total with du Plessis played out the first balls of Mohit Sharma's over for a single.

Over 6 || Score 19/1 (Amla 7; du Plessis 2)

Over 4 || Score 12/1 (Amla 2; du Plessis 0)

Great start from India. Shami provided the first breakthrough by removing de Kock.

The South African opener was never in his elements. He looked tentative in his short stay and was forced to play the drive, resulting in a low catch for Virat Kolhi at mid-off. Wicket maiden for Shami.

Quinton de Kock c Virat Kohli b Mohammed Shami 7 (15b)

Faf du Plessis joins Amla in the centre.

Over 3 || Score 12/0 (de Kock 7; Amla 2)

Over 2 || Score 8/0 (de Kock 4; Amla 2)

Mohammed Shami off to great start, leaked only three runs, one of which was a wide. Hashim Amla, known for his calm  personality, is having a closer look at the deliveries and is watching and waiting.

Over 1 || Score 6/0 (de Kock 4; Amla 1)

Chasing more than a run a ball is nver easy. Quinton de Kock who has got a excellent record against India, survived a nervy first over.

Umesh Yadav almost got the wicket of de Kock, but the thick top-edge flew over for almost a four behind the stumps.

Over 50 || Score 307/7 (Shami 4; Ashwin 5)

Dale Steyn produced a brilliant final over to restrict India's total at 307. He conceded only five runs, and most importantly bolwed four dot balls. Mohammed Shami's batting skills certainly not upto mark, despite clobbering one of Steyn for a four.

Over 49 || Score 302/7 (Shami 0; Ashwin 4)

Soft wicket! Dhoni departed after making a quick 18 runs off 11 balls. Morkel did enough to extract enough bounce to lure the Indian skipper to play an innovative shot. But it ended with de Kock taking a leaping catch, behind the stump.

MS Dhoni c de Kock b Morne Morkel 18 (11b)

Five runs and a wicket made it a good one for the Proteas.

Over 48 || Score 297/6 (Dhoni 17; Ashwin 0)

Another wicket to run out. AB de Villiers hit the target as Jadeja tried to steal a single.

Ravindra Jadeja run out 2 (4b)

But, Dhoni hit Parnell for three successive fours to make it a 13-run over as India inched closer to the magic figure of 300.

Over 47 || Score 284/5 (Dhoni 5; Jadeja 2)

Over 46 || Score 278/5 (Dhoni 1; Jadeja 0)

A brave innings from Rahane came to an end, which also provided Steyn some reason to celebrate his outing today. The South African bowler trapped Rahane in front of the stumps for his first wicket of the match.

Ajinkya Rahane lbw b Dale Steyn 79 (60b)

Seven runs from the over as India continue to push hard for a 300+ total.

Over 45 || Score 271/4 (Rahane 64; Dhoni 0)

Raina didn't survived long. In a bid to increase the run-rate, the southpaw tried pulled, but his effort resulted to a catch for  substitute fielder Rossouw. Raina was dropped two balls earlier at the same area, by the same fielder.

Suresh Raina c sub (Rossouw) b Morne Morkel 6 (5b)

Five runs from Morne Morkel's penultimate over, and his first wicket of the match.

Over 44 || Score 266/3 (Rahane 64; Raina 4)

Finally, the opener has departed. Dhawan did enough to connect the short ball from Parnell, and the ball went to Amla at long leg. Clean catch.A contentious decision though as Parnell seemed the have overstepped.

Shikhar Dhawan c Hashim Amla b Wayne Parnell 137 (146b)

Suresh Raina, who replaced Dhawan, helped himself to a four off the first ball he faced.

Over 43 || Score 254/2 (Dhawan 136; Rahane 64)

Rahane has taken the responsibility from Dhawan, who has failed to connect the ball. Dhawan took a single off the first ball of Tahir's ninth over, then Rahane hit the spinner for a six -- coming down the pitch -- over the long-on boundary. Nine runs from the over for India.

Over 42 || Score 245/2 (Dhawan 136; Rahane 57)

And the script continues, in India's favour. Eight-run over as Rahane found his sweet spot to launch one over the deep mid-wicket boundary.

Over 41 || Score 237/2 (Dhawan 135; Rahane 50)

Another big over for India. Highlight of the over was Dhawan's six from a flick over square leg boundary. Morkel's eighth over went for 10 runs. Rahane also reached his fifty.

Over 40 || Score 227/2 (Dhawan 126; Rahane 49)

Over 37 || Score 204/2 (Dhawan 113; Rahane 39)

Nine runs from Imran Tahir's eighth over. Dhawan and Rahane took a single each off the first two balls, then Dhawan punished the third ball -- which was a short one -- with an improvised shot for a four through the backward square. Three singles followed, to make it a 9-run over.

Over 36 || Score 195/2 (Dhawan 106; Rahane 37)

Over 35 || Score 183/2 (Dhawan 103; Rahane 28)

First World Cup hundred for Shikhar Dhawan, seventh hundred overall.

He took some time to take the guard and crashed one to through the cover, for a boundary to complete the much needed hundred. Eleven runs arrived from Parnell's over, which included two fours, the first going to Rahane's account early in the over.

Over 34 || Score 172/2 (Dhawan 99; Rahane 21)

A restless Dhawan almost threw his wicket. Tried to steal a non-existent single to complete his hundred. Then, ended playing three dots.

Two runs from the over. Brilliant from Duminy, considering India's bid to increase the run-rate.

Over 33 || Score 170/2 (Dhawan 98; Rahane 20)

Busy over as both Dhawan and Rahane milked Parnell's over for the first four balls, then the latter pulled the fifth ball for a four. It was followed by a lucky boundary, behind the stumps. It was half-chance though, with the ball slipping between the wicket-keeper and first slip. The over went for 14 runs, biggest of the match so far.

Over 32 || Score 156/2 (Dhawan 95; Rahane 11)

Morkel has returned with a vengeance. After initial hiccups, the lanky bowler has got his hold on the length and line. In his sixth over, conceded only three runs. Time for Drinks Break.

Over 31 || Score 153/2 (Dhawan 93; Rahane 10)

Over 25 || Score 123/1 (Dhawan 82; Kohli 37)

Dale Steyn is not happy. Angry because a single given away from a senseless throw after a brilliant effort to stop the ball. Steyn was brought in, in the hope to break this burgeoning partnership. His over went for nine runs, which included a four by Dhawan.

Over 24 || Score 114/1 (Dhawan 74; Kohli 36)

Biggest over the match so far. 11 runs as Dhawan started Parnell's over with two successive fours. His partnership with Kolhi is now worth 105 runs.

Over 23 || Score 103/1 (Dhawan 65; Kohli 34)

Another big over for India. Duminy's over went for nine runs as Dhawan punished him for some bad balls. In the third ball, which was short and wayward, Dhawan pulled for a four. With five other singles, India have crossed the 100-run mark and the run-rate is more than four.

Over 22 || Score 94/1 (Dhawan 59; Kohli 32)

A solid foundation for India. Dhawan and Kohli have so far able to negate the threat pose by the Proteas bowlers. Seven runs arrived from Parnell's third over thanks to four singles, a no ball and a double. But Dhawan failed to capitalise on the free-hit, could managed that double.

Over 21 || Score 83/1 (Dhawan 55; Kohli 26)

Over 18 || Score 77/1 (Dhawan 52; Kohli 24)

Fifty for Dhawan. The Indian opener continues his resurrection with a second consecutive half-century, after that killing Australia series. The over also witnessed first wide of the match.

Over 17 || Score 70/1 (Dhawan 47; Kohli 23)

Some anxious moments for India. Tahir, who has been brilliant so far, produced a straighter which crashed into Dhawan's front foot seemed to have knick the bat for a catch. Despite the huge appeal for a catch, which the umpire refused, South Africans didn't call for the referral.

Three runs of the over.

Over 16 || Score 67/1 (Dhawan 45; Kohli 22)

An eventful over. Six runs for India for all the trouble to give away another wicket to the South Africans. Dhawna, who hit a four off the third ball of Morkel, managed to incite some excitement by trying to pull the final ball before the Drinks Break. But the ball failed to reach Tahir at long leg.

Over 15 || Score 61/1 (Kohli 21; Dhawan 40)

Over 14 || Score 56/1 (Dhawan 38; Kohli 18)

Over 5 || Score 10/1 (Dhawan 10; Kohli 0)

Another brilliant over from Steyn, conceded a single only. Dhawan witnessed a fiery spell from South Africa's premier fast bowler, including a perfect bouncer which rose to neck height and hit the Indian. Dhawan negotiated well to take a single off the penultimate ball of the over. India's ten run so far all off Dhawan's bat.

Over 4 || Score 9/0 (Dhawan 9; Kohli 0)

After Rohit's fall, Virat Kohli arrived in the centre to join Dhawan. He played out a maiden over off Philander. Cautious start.

Over 3 || Score 9/1 (Dhawan 9; Kohli 0)

First wicket! Run Out! Brilliant throw from skipper AB de Villiers. A direct throw to send back Rohit Sharma. Indians tried to steal a single, after Dhawan pushed Steyn through the covers, then a mixed-up helped AB to hit the stumps. Earlier in the over, Dhawan did find a boundary.

Over 2 || Score 5/0 (Dhawan 5; Rohit 0)

Shikhar Dhawan is on a different mood, mode today. Cracked the first ball off Vernon Philander through the point area, but there was David Miller, who pulled off a stunning stop. Then, off the fourth ball on the pads, Dhawan clipped for a four through the square leg. With a single off the last ball of the over, India are five for none.

Over 1 || Score 0/0 (Rohit 0; Dhawan 0)

Great start from Dale Steyn. Rohit Sharma played out the first over this blockbuster encounter for a maiden. Steyn did try to extract some live out of this seemingly batting friendly pitch, but Rohit is upto the task. Played well.

Players are out in the centre and it's national anthem time, starting with 'Jana Gana Mana', followed by 'God Bless Africa'. Motivation time!

India XI:

Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (captain, wicket-keeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma

South Africa XI:

Hashim Amla, Quinto de Kock (wicket-keeper),  Faf du Plessis, AB de Villiers (captain), David Miller, Jean-Paul Duminy, Wayne Parnell, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir

TOSS: India have won the toss and Mahendra Singh Dhoni has opted to bat first in Melbourne. India are fielding the same eleven that played against Pakistan; for South Africa, Wayne Parnell is in for Farhaan Behardien, meaning the Proteas are on with four pace bowlers.

India would be aiming to break their World Cup jinx against the formidable South Africa in todays clash.

While Pakistan failed to buck the trend against the defending champions for the sixth time, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men will hope that they turn fourth time lucky after losing to South Africa on three previous editions at the mega event in 1992, 1999 and 2011.

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Axar Patel and Stuart Binny.

South Africa: AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, Faf du Plessis, David Miller, JP Duminy, Farhan Behardien, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander, Imran Tahir, Kyle Abbott, Rillee Russouw, Aaron Phangiso, Kyle Abbott, Wayne Parnell.

Whether it is Peter Kirsten in '92, Jacques Kallis in '99 or Kallis and AB de Villiers in 2011, India have always found a Protea batsman, who had turned out to be a thorn in the flesh for them.

Although a group league match in this tournament is of little consequence but the winner of this game might just go a long way in clinching the top spot in group B, considering that the other teams are just not world beaters.
