India vs Sri Lanka: T20 ranking on line as Asian giants lock horns

New Delhi: After completing a series whitewash in Australia, India will need to win the upcoming Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka to retain their number one position in the ICC T20I ranking table.

India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in a three-match series ahead of the Asia Cup in Bangladesh and World Twenty20. The first match will be played in Pune on Wednesday.

Thanks to their superb outing Down Under, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his team have gained seven places to top the ranking. They have defeated the home team 3-0, after losing the preceding One-Day International series 1-5.

For World T20 champions Sri Lanka, it was a tough few months for them. However, a series win in India will help the Lankans leapfrog India and the West Indies to the top spot.

The following are the series permutations:

  • If India wins 3-0 – India (1st) 127; Sri Lanka (7th) 112
  • If India wins 2-1 – India (1st) 122; Sri Lanka (4th) 116
  • If Sri Lanka wins 2-1 – India (3rd) 117; Sri Lanka (1st) 121
  • If Sri Lanka wins 3-0 – India (7th) 112; Sri Lanka (1st) 125
