New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday hailed Delhi batsman Shikhar Dhawan`s breathtaking knock of 187 in his debut Test against Australia in Mohali and said the entire city is proud of him.
Dikshit spoke to parents of Dhawan on phone and congratulated them for his record breaking Test debut. She hoped that the young cricketer will continue to give many more such spectacular performances. "In Shikhar, India has been gifted an exceptionally talented opening batsman. I am confident that he will continue to produce such superb innings in future," Dikshit said. En route to his 187 in the third cricket Test against Australia, Dhawan scored the fastest hundred on debut in the 136 years of Test history. Dhawan reached the milestone in only 85 balls surpassing West Indian Dwayne Smith`s debut Test ton hit in 93 balls against South Africa back in 2004. He also broke a number of other records. The Chief Minister`s Parliamentary secretary Mukesh Sharma visited Dhawan`s family at Vikaspuri and presented a bouquet of flower and a packet of sweets to them on Dikshit`s behalf. Sharma said he would move a resolution in the Delhi Assembly tomorrow to congratulate Dhawan for his magnificent performance. He said the city government may also arrange a reception in his honour. 27-year-old Dhawan, after his blistering knock yesterday, was sent back after he could add just two runs to his overnight score of 185. He spent 251 minutes at the crease, faced 174 balls and smashed 33 fours besides hitting two sixes. The left-handed batsman has already broken quite a few records en route to his turbo-charged innings and was in line to rewrite a few more, before off-spinner Lyon had him caught by Cowan at silly point in only the day`s second over.
