Ed Cowan says ‘not threatened’ by Shane Watson’s return as openerSydney: Australian Test cricketer Ed Cowan has said that he would welcome the return of vice-captain Shane Watson to the Test side, but not at his expense, following Watson’s success as opener in the ODI series against the West Indies.

Praising Watson’s batting abilities and defending his record as an opener, Cowan said that Watson has shown that he can bat anywhere in the top six, and added that he is comfortable with being an opener with David Warner.

Cowan said the question of Watson possibly returning to opening was not an issue within the team. Adding that he and Warner had a successful opening partnership over the last 14 months, both in terms of volume of runs and average per innings, Cowan dismissed suggestions about breaking up the partnership.

However, Watson said that opening was where he felt most comfortable and added that specially in Test cricket, he had most of his successes as an opener.

Dismissing rumours about putting extra pressure on Cowan, Watson said that he got moved down the order mainly because of his bowling, and to get the balance right.

The star all-rounder`s decision to shelve his interest in bowling for now, due to injury concerns has removed the issue of how his position in the batting order affects his bowling workload.

Cowan will play in Australia`s opening tour match, a two-day game, against an Indian Board President`s XI at Chennai`s Guru Nanak College Ground on Tuesday and Wednesday.
