New Delhi: Updates from Day 2 of the fourth Test match being played between India and Australia at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium. SCORECARD» | COMMENTARY» ==================================================================================== Over: 68.1 II Score: 266/8 (1st innings) (Bhuvneshwar 10*) Day 2, Stumps Nathan Lyon was brought back into the attack and he picked his fifth wicket as Ashwin was plumb in front of the wicket. The ball was pitched outside the off-stump, it spun and struck Ashwin who was on the backfoot. Excellent bowling from Nathan Lyon. R Ashwin lbw b Lyon 12 (41b) ==================================================================================== Over: 67 II Score: 262/7 (1st innings) (Ashwin 12*) Maxwell who was out of the ground for quite some time struck in his first over as he dismissed Jadeja who was playing so well. Ashwin then survived a stumping chance in Maxwell’s second over. Nathan Lyon is still searching for his fifth wicket. The scores level. RA Jadeja lbw b Maxwell 43 (49b) ==================================================================================== Over: 63 II Score: 254/6 (1st innings) (Jadeja 43*) Although Ravindra Jadeja has done enough with the ball in the series, he is showing his abilities with the bat as well. While Ashwin’s job is to give him the strike, Jadeja has been scoring boundary off loose deliveries, and even good ones. He is building an extremely crucial partnership with Ashwin for the seventh wicket. These two have added 46 runs within no time. India now trail by just eight runs. ==================================================================================== Over: 57 II Score: 222/6 (1st innings) (Jadeja 22*) James Pattinson picked his first wicket of the match off a soft dismissal as Dhoni attempted a pull shot and gave an easy catch to Watson near midwicket. The skipper had played some confident strokes and the Aussies would be relieved. Nathan Lyon hasn’t picked a wicket ever since he dismissed Tendulkar but in spite of that the batsmen are looking vulnerable against him. MS Dhoni c Watson b Pattinson 24 (23b) ==================================================================================== Over: 48 II Score: 184/5 (1st innings) (Dhoni 15 ) Nathan Lyon is bowling an exceptional spell here. He deserved Tendulkar’s wicket earlier in the innings, no luck on that occasion but this time he has caught the Little Master plumb in front of the wicket. Nathan Lyon deserves all the credit. He is flighting the ball, he is spinning the ball and even though he isn’t wreaking havoc, Indian batsmen are clearly struggling against him. After than Tendulkar wicket, the expression on Shane Watson’s face said it all, he hasn’t been that relieved in the tournament. Nathan Lyon so far: 15-2-57-4 It wasn’t a memorable debut for Ajinkya Rahane who nudged one straight into the hands of Michael Clarke at backward short leg. Rahane was looking uncomfortable at the crease and it was a matter of time that he was dismissed. SR Tendulkar lbw b Lyon 32 (53b) AM Rahane c Smith b Lyon 7 (19b) ==================================================================================== Over: 43 II Score: 153/3 (1st innings) (Tendulkar 25*) Just two overs after Tea, Siddle fired an unplayable delivery at Vijay who couldn’t do much about it as he tried to play a defensive shot and was caught by the keeper. The Australian bowlers have maintained the rhythm even after tea and the runs are now hard to come. M Vijay c Wade b Siddle 57 (123b) ==================================================================================== Over: 38 II Score: 135/2 (1st innings) (Vijay 54*) Tea: That has to be Australia’s session. Nathan Lyon was at his best today and even Mitchell Johnson proved how he could trouble any batsmen with his swing. 24 overs were bowled in this session as India scored 76 runs and the Aussies picked two wickets. It could have been three, that lbw shout against Tendulkar was very very close. The Australian bowlers are getting back in their groove and we can be rest assured for another thrilling session. ==================================================================================== Over: 35 II Score: 122/2 (1st innings) (Vijay 54*) The charged up Nathan Lyon almost dismissed Tendulkar but the umpire didn’t think so. There was a huge shout for a lbw as Tendulkar attempted a sweep shot and was hit on the pads, in front of the middle and the Aussies were dejected as the umpire Kettleborough turned down the appeal. That could have been a big blow for India. Murali Vijay reached yet another half-century. What a series he is having. ==================================================================================== Over: 28 II Score: 114/2 (1st innings) (Vijay 49*) Nathan Lyon strikes twice! Soon after scoring the half-century, Pujara was bowled by Lyon off a good delivery. Pujara missed the line of the ball and Lyon was paid off for some good bowling. A few overs later, Virat Kohli was struck on the pads and even though he wasn’t happy with the decision, it looked out. The crowd wasn’t too much disappointed with Kohli’s dismissal as in comes Tendulkar, probably playing his last Test in India. As usual, the roar from the crowd is deafening. V Kohli lbw b Lyon 1 (8b) CA Pujara b Lyon 52 (76b) ==================================================================================== Over: 20 II Score: 81/0 (1st innings) (Pujara 44*, Vijay 29*) Nothing has been working for the Aussies. The edges aren’t carrying to the keeper, the inside edges aren’t hitting the stumps and to add to their woes, Pujara is playing some excellent shots off good deliveries. Just one over of spin bowled by Nathan Lyon. Meanwhile Murali Vijay has completed 1000 runs in Test cricket. ==================================================================================== Over: 14 II Score: 59/0 (1st innings) (Pujara 28*, Vijay 23*) That’s lunch on Day 2 Formidable opening stand for India and the Aussies continue to hunt for the first breakthrough. Shane Watson showed more faith in his pacers as none of spinners were brought into the attack. There was an appeal for lbw off the last ball of this session but it was turned down by the umpire. A lot was said how bad this pitch would behave, but Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara have had no problems whatsoever. ==================================================================================== Over: 11 II Score: 56/0 (1st innings) (Pujara 25*) Fifty is up for India. The openers are looking in good form here and none of the bowlers have managed to make an impact. There has been odd bounce on a few occasions, but apart from that, it is a really good start by these two. ==================================================================================== Over: 5 II Score: 34/0 (1st innings) (Pujara 21*) In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara was sent to open the innings with Murali Vijay. Both have them have hit some superb ground strokes for boundaries. India are off to a good start and the fans at the Feroze Shah Kotla are having a great weekend. ==================================================================================== Over: 112.1 II Score: 262/10 (1st innings) (Pattinson 30*) The frustration was increasing with every run and Pragyan Ojha wrapped up the Australia innings with his 100th Test wicket. Pattinson was caught in the slips after playing a useful hand. Huge relief for MS Dhoni and Ojha as he reaches the milestone in style. JL Pattinson c Kohli b Ojha 30 (91b) ==================================================================================== Over: 108 II Score: 254/9 (1st innings) (Pattinson 25*) Ravichandran Ashwin scalped his fifth wicket of the innings as he ended Siddle’s resilience. The ball was pitched slightly outside the off-stump and it spun into the batsman, Siddle failed to get his bat into the line, in time and India finally got the breakthrough. Nathan Lyon survived two very close lbw appeals. And once again, Ravindra Jadeja is bowling some unplayable deliveries. PM Siddle b Ashwin 51 (136b) ==================================================================================== Over: 101 II Score: 242/8 (1st innings) (Siddle 50*, Pattinson 19*) Peter Siddle reached his maiden Test fifty in the first over of the day bowled by Ashwin with a risky single. It has been an innings of substance, the highest score for Australia in this innings. These two have now put a partnership of 53 runs. ==================================================================================== The Australians who have had a forgettable series so far should hit the field on a positive note as the tail--enders have put some fight. Had they been all-out on Day 1, India would have once again dictated the proceedings. But in that last session, Peter Siddle made sure the Aussies cross the 200-run mark and if he can frustrate the Indian bowlers with Pattinson for a session or two today, their pacers will have a good chance to get some substantial purchase from the wicket. The tail enders have frustrated India enough as Peter Siddle and James Pattinson have added 42 runs for the last wicket so far after Australia lost their eighth wicket for just 189 runs. The last-wicket partnership has been a frustrating one for India and they would want to wrap up the innings as soon as possible. On Day 1, Peter Siddle showed exemplary patience in trying conditions to lead the fightback as Australia managed to finish the day at 231/8. Siddle scored 47 runs – the highest of the Australian innings so far—and has been the reason the visitors have been able to survive the full day that saw Indians sending down 98 overs.
