Melbourne: Indian century-maker Virat Kohli said that although his team was surprised by the selection of only one specialist spinner for the first Test by Australia, it will make sure that the decision backfired badly on the tourists.
Kohli, who believed that a dusty red soil pitch will favour the hosts even more on the final two days of the first Test, said that although his team was surprised to see three seamers- James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc- in the Oz line-up, it was an advantage for the hosts in the present conditions, the Age reports.
According to Kohli, the presence of the three seamers in the conditions was an advantage because it is not possible to have the quicks’ bowling spells for more than three or four overs, and added that it made it easy for India to capitalize on those bowling spells.
Australia entered the Test with Pattinson, Siddle and Starc, as well as a seam-bowling all-rounder, Moises Henriques, shunning a specialist back-up for Nathan Lyon in spin-friendly conditions.
A radical selection for subcontinent conditions, it has not proved a successful one to date, the report added.
